Grace is a volunteer with FCA’s ASPIRE after-school program. Her interest in teaching as a career moved her toward volunteering as a tutor and was matched with middle school youth in the program. She is a very dedicated, compassionate volunteer working with students to achieve higher grades and help build their self-esteem. She goes above and beyond to create a safe, trusting relationship with the students she tutors. She event presented the staff with a creative writing elective which will most likely be implemented this spring as one of the elective choices for the students.
FCA was proud to nominate Grace for the Community Fund of Darien’s Outstanding Emerging Volunteer award, and she won! Read more about Grace’s volunteerism:
What motivated you to become an ASPIRE tutor?
My love for teaching! When I was a kid I had teachers who didn’t always consider how I learned best. Now, I see it is a gift to have the opportunity to support each child’s unique learning style and to witness the moment when everything clicks.
What does volunteering mean to you personally?
To me, volunteering means remembering a kid’s name, their situation, and the kind of presence they need from me. For some, I’m a high schooler they ask math questions. For others, I’m someone who understands academic struggles, checks in, listens, and cares. And sometimes I’m just someone who worries about them, and that’s what they need. There are so many ways to help people, this is the one that makes me happiest.
Is there a moment or memory from volunteering that stands out to you?
Yes, when a student remembered my name for the first time. It was my second or third day, and when I walked in, she shouted, “Grace!” and ran to hug me. She seemed genuinely excited to see me. In that moment I realized I was making an impact, that the kids I tutored looked forward to seeing me. She’s still one of my favorite kids and I’m so grateful for her friendship and trust.
Any other comments about your volunteer experience?
Programs like ASPIRE truly set kids up for success. I was part of a similar after-school program where I learned how to study. I’m incredibly grateful to now be able to give the same kind of support I once received.
Thank you, Grace, for giving our students your time and talents!
