Virtual Conversation: Children’s Mental Health

Jan 14, 2022 | CMH, IICAPS

Thank you to all who were able to join us yesterday for our conversation about children’s mental health with panelists Vannessa L. Dorantes, Margarita Munoz, Patti Nietsch and moderated by Lamond Daniels.

Below you’ll find the recording of the conversation. Please feel free to share with those who might be interested.

There was a great deal of information shared yesterday. Resources recommended by our panelists can be found here. Below are just a few of the key takeaways from the event:

“One of the benefits of being in a state like Connecticut is we are relatively small geographically so we can pivot and be nimble really, really quickly. We have pivoted and stretched collectively to link arms with each other … as we step through what we call this imperfect storm of COVID-19, racial unrest, and economic devastation.” -Vannessa Dorantes

The pandemic as we all know has created another sort of crisis: a loss of connection and isolation as well as economic stress and parental stress. And we know that parental stress trickles down to children as well. So when you treat a child you treat the community as well, because you’re addressing issues with parents and the school system.” -Margarita Munoz

One suggestion for parents and caregivers is to create a sanctuary at home as much as you can. Come home and have dinner together, put those devices in a basket for an hour. Maybe say to your kids, ‘I had such a bad day at work, I’m going to go in the other room and meditate for a few minutes. Anyone want to join me” -Patti Nietsch
