It’s not every day you can impact the life of one person and improve life for an entire community, but that’s what Family & Children’s Agency (FCA) did for Nickel thanks to the generosity of caring people like you.
A single mom with two rambunctious boys and pregnant with her third, Nickel was struggling.
Her depression made it difficult to get out of bed in the morning, and without a regular schedule her home was chaotic. The boys started missing school, and Nickel thought she would have to drop out of the college program she’d been working so hard to complete because she just couldn’t manage it all.
“I was ready to give up,” she said.
That’s when she was referred to Family & Children’s Agency’s MOMS program.
Her case manager helped Nickel organize her home and workload. By creating a daily schedule, the boys found it easier to transition from one activity to the next so they could attend school every day and get there on time. Nickel learned ways to engage the kids’ curiosity, and they celebrated milestones together, like birthdays and 9-month-old Josiah’s first steps.
“I don’t have a mother figure, and FCA helped me feel like I belong, like someone cares,” said Nickel.
This year, Nickel is graduating from Norwalk Community College as a nurse. She nearly fell through the cracks, but with guidance and counseling from FCA she has become an incredible mom and an essential part of the community.
