Celebrating Black History Month

Feb 22, 2022 | Staff

FCA’s Social Justice Workgroup is a committee of staff members who have organized to serve as a catalyst for dialog and action in response to inherent biases in us and in our community. This month, the Social Justice Workgroup celebrated Black History Month with staff.

“Black History Month is an opportunity to reflect and learn about the people, events, and movements that have shaped our community and our nation. It’s also a great time to recognize the current generation of Black leaders — those who are shaping the chapters in our history that are yet to be written,” said staff member Tanya Velez as she opened a virtual lunch activity for staff.

The workgroup highlighted the work of actor, producer, and activist Sidney Poitier. Staff were treated to an overview of his life and a short clip from one of his renowned movies, “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner,” which aired in theaters in 1967 following the Supreme Court ruling allowing for interracial marriages. In breakout rooms, staff were able to reflect and interpret the scene.

Staff were treated to a Black History “Guess Who” game to win prizes, and all were sent a virtual flipbook highlighting influential black leaders of history and today, both national and local. To view the flipbook, click here.

Thank you to our Social Justice Workgroup for organizing these events, and Happy Black History Month!
