When Margaret arrived in our community, she was determined to build a stable, independent life for herself and her children. But as a newcomer who did not speak English, she faced significant challenges, including finding stable housing, securing employment, and navigating the complex medical needs of one of her children.
At the time, Margaret and her children were living with a cousin. Her son, Hekim, faced serious health challenges that affected his ability to see, walk, stand, and eat. His care required frequent medical appointments, specialized services, and ongoing coordination.
Despite these obstacles, Margaret never lost sight of her goal: creating a better future for her family. With support from Family & Children’s Agency (FCA), she began taking steps toward that future.

Finding Support When It Mattered Most
“FCA stepped in with true compassion,” Margaret recalls. “They didn’t just help us navigate the hardships, they invested in our success and treated us like family.”
FCA worked closely with Margaret to help her manage Hekim’s medical needs, providing transportation to appointments at multiple locations and translation services so she could actively participate in decisions about his care.
Her FCA case manager also helped coordinate medical visits and other essential services, ensuring that Hekim received consistent care while reducing some of the day-to-day challenges Margaret faced as a parent.
With these supports in place, Margaret could focus not only on her son’s health but also on building a more secure future for her entire family.
From New Beginnings to Financial Independence
Margaret was determined to become financially independent and create a stable home for her children. With FCA’s guidance, she obtained her driver’s license, an important step toward greater independence. She also received assistance accessing financial resources to enroll in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program.
Through hard work and perseverance, Margaret completed the program and passed her certification exams. FCA then helped her navigate the job search process and secure employment.
Today, Margaret works full-time as a CNA, lives in her own apartment, and is financially independent.
Her children are thriving, too. They love riding their bikes, spending time outdoors, and learning new things. Their faces light up when their FCA case manager arrives with new books to read. The family also attends church together and has found a welcoming community through their congregation.
What began as a period of uncertainty has become a new chapter of stability, opportunity, and hope.
Building Brighter Futures Together
“I truly believe that without Family & Children’s Agency, my family would not be where we are today,” Margaret shares. “Their support helped us move from a situation where we were struggling just to have a safe place to stay to a place where I can work, provide for my children, and look toward a brighter future.”
Margaret’s story reflects her extraordinary determination and the difference that individualized, long-term support can make for families facing multiple challenges.
At FCA, we recognize that families’ needs are often interconnected. A parent working toward financial independence may also need assistance securing housing, coordinating medical care, accessing transportation, or supporting their children’s development. By addressing these challenges together, FCA helps families build the foundation for lasting stability and success.
Through December 31, a generous FCA Board member will match donations dollar for dollar, up to $100,000. That means your year-end gift can make twice the impact for children, families, adults, and seniors throughout our community.
